The Advent Calendar
2021
Patrick Ridremont
Christmas, Gore, Horror, Psychological, Scary, Paranormal, Genies
This French film takes a classic Christmas tradition and twists it into something dark.
Eva, an ex-dancer, is now a paraplegic living in a wheelchair. When her friend Sophie gifts her an old wooden antique advent calendar before Christmas, she realizes each window contains a surprise that triggers repercussions in real life.
The film is in French, you can watch an English dubbed version, but we recommend the original with subtitles if you don't speak French.
Very reminiscent of 'The Monkey's Paw' (1933), this is kind of a cursed object paranormal flick, but it is deliberately ambiguous, not explaining whether it’s a demon, spirit, witchcraft, or genie; we are categorizing this as a Genie film.
The festive setting contrasts sharply with the escalating violence, making it a standout in the Christmas horror subgenre.
It's very interesting to have a paraplegic protagonist, particularly how they weave their disability into the plot, really going deep into their psyche, and Derouand gives a great performance.
The film features quite a bit of eye candy for everyone, with multiple nude scenes.
There is definitely gore, but the scariness is mostly psychological.
Themes include trauma, desire, and moral compromise; with a great unexpected ending.
Directed by rookie Patrick Ridremont, this film is his directorial debut and we certainly hope that he stays in the directors chair.
Features Eugénie Derouand, Honorine Magnier, Clément Olivieri, Janis Abrikh, Vladimir Perrin, and others.
*Trigger warnings: car accident, animal death.
