Krampus

2015

Michael Dougherty

Christmas, Folklore, Horror, Scary, Paranormal, TV-14

When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.

The film is based on the eponymous character from Austro-Bavarian folklore, who is said to punish naughty children during the holiday season, kind of like a co-worker of Santa Claus.
It's difficult to classify Krampus, it's a mythological hybrid: a demon, spirit, and monster (we are putting it in the paranormal category).
The film blends dark comedy with horror, creating a unique and entertaining holiday movie.
There are some intense and violent scenes, not too much gore, the scares come more from the suspense, the unsettling atmosphere, and the terrifying presence of Krampus and his minions.
Themes explored include consumerism, morality, and family.
This is a stand alone film, none of the other Krampus films out there are worth watching or related.
Directed by Michael Dougherty, known for 'Trick 'r Treat' (2007), and 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' (2019).
Features Emjay Anthony, Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania LaVie Owen, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Krista Stadler, and others.
