Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale
2010
Jalmari Helander
Folklore, Christmas, Action, Horror, Comedy, Scary
A subversive Christmas fable that changes everything you thought you knew about Santa Claus. There's an ancient frozen secret in the Finnish mountains, as children vanish and eerie elves emerge, a boy and his father must stop a deadly force before Christmas. This Christmas, everyone will believe in Santa Claus.
Reindeer Hunters! Santa and his Elves!
This Finnish folklore tale takes place in snowy Lapland (Northern Finland), and most of the film is in Finnish, so subtitles will be required.
It's a very unusual, but entertaining film that combines fantasy, action, horror, and comedy genres.
While there are some intense scenes, the focus is more on suspense and the creepy atmosphere more than gore.
Great characterization and performances from the cast, lots of dry Scandinavian humour delivered perfectly.
Directed by Jalmari Helander, a relatively unknown Finnish director with a love of action flicks.
Features Onni Tommila, Jorma Tommila, Tommi Korpela, Rauno Juvonen, Per Christian Ellefsen, and others.
*Trigger warnings: animal deaths, child abduction
