Black Christmas

2006

Glen Morgan

Christmas, Gore, Horror, Mystery, Remake, Splatter, So Bad It’s Good

This film is an underrated remake of the film of the name from 1974. On Christmas Eve, an escaped maniac returns to his childhood home, which is now a sorority house, and begins to murder the sorority sisters one by one.

This remake retcons the villain a new origin story, diving deep into his past, a different touch that's completely missing in the mysterious original.
The film definitely doesn't come close to the original, which is a masterpiece, but it is still very good in it's own respect.
The film strikes a completely different style and tone than the original; there is a heavy emphasis on gore and shock value, with disturbing graphic violence and intense scenes you may have to watch through your fingers.
The deaths are not just brutal, they’re Christmas aestheticized, often framed with lights, ornaments, or festive irony.
You might be wondering while you watch if it was intended to be a comedy, it wasn't; like many films from the 2000's, the film comes off as absurd instead of scary, definitely a “so-bad-it’s-good” experience for horror veterans.
Interestingly there are 3 different endings, the one shown in Europe being much more violent, you can watch all 3 endings on the DVD bonus version.
Directed by Glen Morgan, known for 'Willard' (2003), but has mostly worked in the industry as a writer and producer.
Features Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Andrea Martin, Lacey Chabert, Kristen Cloke, Robert Mann, and others.
*Trigger warnings: child abuse, incest, stalking, home invasion, cannibalism, and ommetaphobia.
