"Mother! they're still not sure it IS a baby!"
This captivatingly bizarre black & white film from the legendary director David Lynch is a must-see cult classic.
The film is surreal, feeling like a bad dream about impending fatherhood, and interestingly it has several dream sequences within it.
Atmosphere and aesthetic are God to Lynch, everything in the production was meticulously chosen to complete his uncompromising style; a factor in why this low budget film took many years to complete, running out money multiple times.
Themes include anxiety, alienation, and parenthood.
A highlight of the film is that there is no score, the sound in the film relies entirely on foley (crafting noises), it is an ASMR experience, often disturbing and oppressive to the ears.
The creature design is excellent, grotesque yet oddly cute; Lynch has never revealed how it was brought to life with practical effects.
The film originally was not well received, only being played at midnight showings, but later gained a cult following, eventually being inducted into The U.S National Film Registry.
We highly recommend watching this wonderfully uncomfortable masterpiece in complete darkness, volume cranked, and maybe even with some cannabis should you feel so inclined.
Features Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph, Jeanne Bates, Judith Roberts, Laurel Near, and Jack Fisk.
