The Little Mermaid
2023
Rob Marshall
Remake, Witchcraft, Sea, Family-Friendly, Musical, Comedy, Animated
This live-action remake of 'The Little Mermaid' (1989) is decidedly just as good as the original animated film, one of the better live-action remakes Disney has made.
The decision to remake the Disney films as live-actions, beginning in the 2010's, was quite controversial; most Disney films are re-released every 10 years, we think this was a fresh and smart decision and the right time to do so as CGI made them possible.
It was also controversial at the time of release to cast POC actors, there was a pig push for more POC representation in films and a big pushback against it in the U.S and Eastern Asian countries.
The film generally stays true to the animated original; there are some minor changes to characters, more character depth, the introduction of great new songs to sing along to, and a slight change to the climax.
The acting is excellent, particularly Bailey's performance as Ariel and McCarthy's performance as Ursula.
We do wish the CGI budget was a bit bigger, but it is intended for kids so it does the job, and overall the visuals are beautiful.
Make some popcorn for this sinister under the sea witchy tale and have a nostalgic sing-along with your kids.
Young children may find many parts of this films very scary, use your discretion parents.
Features Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Jessica Alexander, Simone Ashley, Jude Akuwudike, and others.
