I Know What You Did Last Summer
2025
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Slasher, Thriller, Scary, Remake, Gore
This is a requel (remake & sequel), we have some returning legacy characters from the original 1997 film of the same name, it has been 27 years since the last sequel which released in 1998.
The film is more or less a formulaic recreation of the original, sure to be nostalgic for fans, filled with nods to the original story but following a different storyline.
Should this film have been made? Probably not, we would have preferred no returning legacy characters, only legacy characters, or even the children of legacy characters.
There is some of great kills and gore, but the film can be predictable and kind of boring, unable to maintain tension.
We wish the characterization had been better, we really only get to know the main character well, a sin for a slasher flick, we need to be invested in the characters somewhat before their deaths, and the secondary characters aren't fleshed out enough.
The film has some scary scenes but it is held back by the score that doesn't do enough to enhance the tension and dread.
We get quite a bit of sexy eye candy, but it is kind of wasted, horny sexy teens must be punished.
Annoying twists thrown in leave this open for another sequel, but will anyone be excited to watch it?
A quote from the film perfectly sums it up, "nostalgia is overrated".
Despite our slightly scathing critique, the film is fun and watchable, this was Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's directorial debut and hopefully she gets the chemistry right in her next film.
Features Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Junior, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Madelyn Cline, and others.
