Urban Legend
1998
Jamie Blanks
Slasher, Thriller, Scary, Mystery
This teen slasher wasn't well received at the time of it's release, many compared it to the inarguably much better 'Scream 2' (1997) which had come out the year prior, but it has since become a well-loved classic.
The film is definitely predictable and unoriginal, but it is also very playful, full of horror tropes that you will have fun watching if you are a horror veteran.
You might be wondering what an "urban legend" is? Before we were all carrying the internet in our pockets, people used to share spooky stories about people and places in their communities; and these stories were told and repeated through generations, becoming legends.
Many of these urban legends have been made into films over the years or been recorded on the Creepy Pasta website.
The 90's aesthetic is excellent, lots of jump scares and creative deaths, good twists, and Gayheart gives a particularly good performance.
This was Jamie blanks directorial debut, his film career has focused more on composing.
We dare you to try out the Bloody Mary urban legend at home!
Features Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Tara Reid, Michael Rosenbaum, Loretta Devine, Joshua Jackson, Robert Englund, John Neville, Danielle Harris, Natasha Gregson Wagner, Brad Dourif, and others.
*Trigger warning: animal death.
