The Craft

1996

Andrew Fleming

Witchcraft, Original, Not Scary

This is a pretty great witch film, great story, full of great special effects (the sharks are not real).
Like most witch films, feminism is a theme, but also toxic masculinity.
The film is bursting with 90's nostalgia, those emo outfits were all the rage at the time.
Our only complaint is the editing of the witches levitating in the 2nd half, but just ignore that.
Fair warning: there are a lot of snakes and other creepy crawlies.
More than 2000 live snakes were used, and all but a few of the other fear inducing crawlies are real as well.
There is a sequel that came out 24 years later, we would call it a "requel"; the formula for the movie is the same, but it is most certainly for a new generation.
We recommend watching both films in one afternoon and see the massive societal changes.
Features Neve Campbell, Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, Skeet Ulrich and others.
Trigger warning: sexual assault.
