The Last Voyage Of The Demeter
2023
André Øvredal
Vampires, Very Scary, Thriller, Must-See, Sea
This vampire flick is sure to thrill, so atmospheric and scary, a must-see new tale about Dracula despite some plot problems.
Although this is Dracula, we are not tagging this as a remake because the particular material used has never been adapted to film before. It is based on 'The Captain's Log', a chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, and follows the doomed crew of the merchant ship Demeter as they attempt to survive their voyage from Transylvania to London.
Incredible sets, cinematography, and CGI create a dreary and claustrophobic atmosphere.
The design of the vampire is so well done, it is based on the original Dracula design from 'Nosferatu' (1922), very animalistic and demonic, and the incredible CGI really brings it to life in action scenes.
The acting from the whole cast is stellar, Hawkins and Cunningham give particularly great performances.
The film has a slow pace some viewers won't enjoy, but we think it matches what is happening in the story, sea journeys for most of human history were months long deadly adventures.
The film is very scary with brutal deaths and jump scares; we wish they had done a better job of building up dread of the unexpected though and although the score was good, it could have been better at heightening fear.
The ending definitely leaves the creation of a sequel open but nothing has been proposed yet.
Features Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, and others.
* Trigger warning: multiple animal deaths
