The First Omen

2024

Arkasha Stevenson

Paranormal, Prequel, Scary, Psychological

This prequel to 'The Omen' (1976) was made almost 50 years after the original, which says a lot about the staying power of the first film.
Interestingly, the film has almost the exact same plot as another film released the same year, 'Immaculate'; both films explore themes of female oppression, bodily autonomy, and corruption within the Catholic Church.
The film has great special effects, cinematography, and a score that contribute to an unsettling atmosphere.
The film does a great job building tension and dread, with just a few jump scares, and little gore; this is a psychological scare.
We can't complain much about this pretty successful prequel; maybe it could have strayed a little further from the original and had a faster pace.
Features Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sônia Braga, Ralph Ineson, Bill Nighy, and others.
*Trigger warning: sexual assault.
