A skeptical author who debunks hauntings insists on staying in the infamously haunted room 1408 at The Dolphin Hotel. Once inside, he finds himself trapped as the room unleashes a series of escalating psychological terrors, forcing him to fight for his sanity and survival.
This is a very unique and fun film, we felt like the director had never seen a horror movie before, its somewhat whimsical, and a little reminiscent of the tv show LOST.
Like many horror films, this is a Stephen King story, that is loosely based on a true story.
This psychological film doesn’t have great CGI but it does have a few great scares, the dread you will feel is almost unbearable, so thrilling.
Cusack gives an excellent performance and most of the film is just him wilding out in a hotel room which creates a unique atmosphere feeling trapped with him in the room.
There are 4 versions with different endings.
While the film is generally effective in its scares, some of the horror tropes and plot twists may feel predictable to seasoned horror fans and the pace could have been better sorted out.
Features John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, and others.
*Trigger warning: suicide
