The Monkey
2025
Osgood Perkins
Paranormal, Comedy, Not Scary
This Stephen King story is another haunted object horror film and we don't want to say that it was disappointing, but it was certainly unusual and the plot was unexpected; hopes for a smash hit were high with legendary horror director James Wan producing.
This film was gruesome from beginning to end, giving us non-stop shocking and creative deaths that horror fans will find entertaining and hopefully funny (it is a comedy).
The film has a personality to it's style and characterization, a lot of waxing poetic that brought many films to mind while watching like 'Napoleon Dynamite' (2004), 'Juno' (2007), or any Tim Burton film; but we wouldn't say anything made us laugh out loud or endeared us.
Some of the film is narrated but use of the narrator is uneven and missing throughout.
The film has a good aesthetic complemented by it's score and camera work of the many deaths, but we wished it leaned in more to it's attempted kitsch.
Despite having so many gory deaths, we wouldn't call this film scary, stick to eating popcorn and not dinner while you watch this.
We hope we have lowered your expectations enough to enjoy this silly and light hearted kill fest of a film.
Features Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O'Brien, and others.
Directed by Osgood Perkins, most famous for the hit horror film 'Longlegs' (2023), we are excited about the trajectory of his career.
