The Town That Dreaded Sundown
2014
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
Mystery, Sequel, Scary, Slasher, Thriller, Based On True Story, Horror, Gore
This film is both a remake and sequel of the 1976 film of the same name, a requel, but technically speaking, we would call it a sequel since the original is canon.
Also set in Texarkana, the same town where the original film was based, the story unfolds 65 years after the "Phantom Killer" murders. Every Halloween the town screens the 1976 movie, but this year the killings begin again, so meta. The killer mimics scenes from the 1976 movie, blurring the line between fiction and reality.
This franchise is inspired by the real 1946 Texarkana "Moonlight Murders".
The atmosphere is great in this hollowed out American sunbelt town, aided by a constantly changing score that keeps it exciting.
Unfortunately the film drags quite a bit and loses it's intensity, and also doesn't have a very satisfying ending, but it is definitely worth watching.
The film is filled with classic tropes, a lot of unique eyeball shots, dream sequences, a kick ass final girl, and gore heavy kills; including one the most unique we have seen using a musical instrument.
We highly recommend that you watch the original film first.
Features Addison Timlin, Veronica Cartwright, Anthony Anderson, Travis Tope, Gary Cole, and others.
