The Others

2001

Alejandro Amenábar

Haunted House , Mystery, Paranormal, Scary, Horror, Psychological, TV-14

'The Others' Plot Summary: In the immediate aftermath of World War II, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands (located off the coast of France but part of UK) becomes convinced that they are not alone in the mansion.

"Whatever you do, don't open the curtains"
It is a very decadent and atmospheric set, taking place in a veritable Downton Abbey like estate, bathed in moody lighting and shadows.
Nicole Kidman gives a stellar performance as the Mom, she really carries the film and most of it just her emotions and reactions.
The film is tense and wildly uncomfortable, aided by an excellent eerie score interspersed with silence, sure to give you goosebumps.
There is a pretty epic twist in the final act, this is not the first time this twist has been used, but it is very satisfying and unexpected.
The film certainly could have been scarier, it is psychological suspense mystery that burns slowly.
Directed by Alejandro Amenábar, this is his only horror film and he is not well known.
Features Nicole Kidman, Fionnula Flanagan, Christopher Eccleston, Alakina Mann, James Bentley, Eric Sykes, Elaine Cassidy, and others.
