Suspiria

2018

Luca Guadagnino

Witchcraft, Remake, Scary, Avant-Garde

This remake of the 1977 original is a bit controversial; many viewers don't appreciate a classic film being remade, but on the other side, many viewers weren't enamoured with the original and enjoy this story for the first time in this retelling.
The film is more or less a direct remake of the original with some minor changes to the setting, one major differentiation being the colour palette and score.
The film has a stunning 70's set and costumes that are interestingly paired with a modern soundtrack score.
The dialogue is in English, but as the film takes place in Germany, there is occasional German dialogue you will need to turn on subtitles for.
If you are a fan of psychological horror you will enjoy this film, but be sure to put your phone away as it can be hard to follow and you need to pay attention, lots of disturbing body horror and gore.
You could definitely argue that Mia Goth's typecasting as a horror girl stems from this film.
Features Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Angela Winkler, Ingrid Caven, Elena Fokina, Sylvie Testud, Renée Soutendijk, Christine LeBoutte, Fabrizia Sacchi, Małgosia Bela, Jessica Harper, and others.
*Trigger warning: self harm.
