Sinners
2025
Ryan Coogler
Scary, Vampires, Horror, Musical, Gore, Action, Metaphor
This film is an epic cinematic blockbuster mixing genres; it's a decadent period drama, a dread inducing horror, a bloody action flick, and even has some musical elements.
The film feels very long and slow paced at times, definitely could have used some serious editing and focusing, there are too many ideas, the runtime is 2h17m but feels like 3h.
The southern gothic aesthetic of the film is a visual eyegasm, verdant costumes and set design, so beautiful you will feel like you are actually in 1930's Mississippi.
There is a lot of setup before anything scary happens, you get a taste a quarter in, the horror is coming after we get lots of characterization and time to build attachment to the characters.
We love that the story stays true to all the classic vampire rules: need to be invited in, garlic, sunlight, silver, holy water, and wooden stakes.
The performances from the entire cast are excellent, particularly Michael B. Jordan who plays both twin brothers; this was accomplished with a combination of motion control, body doubles, and digital compositing to seamlessly portray the two characters interacting on screen.
Themes include sin, inheritance, and community trauma; the vampires are a metaphor.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, most famous for the superhero blockbuster 'Black Panther' (2018).
Features Miles Caton, Saul Williams, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Jack O'Connell, Yao, Helena Hu, Michael B. Jordan, Li Jun Li, Sam Malone, Hailee Steinfeld, Omar Benson Miller, and others.
