Frankenstein

2025

Guillermo Del Toro

Supernatural, Remake, Based On Book, Horror, Not Scary, Gore

A remake of the masterpiece 'Frankenstein' (1931), based on the novel by Mary Shelley, this adaptation closely follows the original text (with some exceptions). Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist but deeply flawed man, experiments to re-animate a patchwork of corpses into an abomination of nature that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

We were certainly hopeful that this legendary director could give us a new masterpiece, however, the film feels like it is missing something, it's empty.
Visually, the film is a cinematic feast for the eyes, a triumph of the art department and production design that is sure to make your pupils dilate; however the digital effects needed to be toned down.
We get some very graphic body horror, the furthest gore has ever been amplified in a Frankenstein film, very disturbing, but also a practical effects victory.
The first half of the film really drags, seriously lacking in dialogue, and the director fails to make you develop feelings for or about the characters.
Some serious casting mistakes; Isaac gives a theatrical performance, Goth and Waltz don't get enough screen time or depth, and Dance revives his character from Game Of Thrones.
Thankfully Elordi gives a stunning performance as the tormented monster, really rescuing the film in the 2nd half; although we don't get to see enough of Victor and the Monster's relationship, which really doesn't help the story or plot.
We get nudity from both leading men, seeing everything but their manhood, the monster's body is really just Elordi's chiseled form with some airbrush makeup.
Veering away from the novel, a major theme is abuse and how it is passed from one generation to the next, and we think it was a mistake to give the monster superhero attributes.
The film is definitely worth watching, but we wish they had made many different choices, and less errors.
Features Ralph Ineson, Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, Burn Gorman, Charles Dance, Jacob Elordi, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Lauren Collins, and others.
Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, known for 'Pinocchio' (2022), 'The Shape Of Water' (2017), and more.
*Trigger warnings: childbirth, physical abuse, forcible confinement, animal deaths
