The Cleansing Hour
2019
Damien LeVeck
Paranormal, Scary, Thriller, Psychological
This is Damien Leveck's directorial debut and damn is it an exciting and fresh combination of the paranormal and tech horror subgenres; he is also known for 'A Creature Was Stirring' (2023).
Certainly not the first film with paranormal fakers, however the tech aspect makes this really cool; we bet 'Black Mirror' is upset they didn't get to feature a version of this film.
*Spoiler* We wish the film did not have the "Bury your gays" trope, really added nothing to the plot but confusion and should have been edited out.
The film has great special effects and makeup, very disturbing and gruesome, however the CGI budget comes up a little short, not quite enough pixels.
Major theme is internet fame and deception, very relevant for social media users and content consumers.
The film is scary but could have been scarier and at times its on the verge of being comedy.
We definitely think 'Smile 2' (2024) could have been inspired by an aspect of this film.
Eye candy bonus, Ryan Guzman shows off his sculpted body for much of the film.
Features Ryan Guzman, Kyle Gallner, Emma Holzer, Alix Angelis, and others.
