Gretel & Hansel
2020
Osgood Perkins
Avant-Garde, Not Scary, Witchcraft, Remake, Mystery
This is the most unique re-imagining of this Grimm Brothers fairy tale we have ever watched, a fresh and dark remake from legendary horror director Osgood Perkins that we really appreciate.
One of the most interesting aspects is the witch's house, it blends modern Scandinavian architecture with Art Nouveau, a big departure from the story's origins that gives the film a cool aesthetic.
The classic fairytale is more of a jumping off point here, it's very exciting to anticipate what will happen next and to be surprised as the story diverges from it's usual path.
Some parts of the story seem a little half baked and don't add anything of substance to the film, you definitely get the sense that it was intended to be scarier but that was edited out.
Great special effects and CGI, incredible set, costumes, and lighting.
There are definitely some disturbing parts but overall this is not that scary, more of a menacing and creepy atmosphere, good film for horror newbies and teens.
Features Sophia Lillis, Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw, and others.
