Doctor Sleep
2019
Mike Flanagan
Not Scary, Sequel, Paranormal
Does this sequel to the masterpiece 'The Shining' (1980) hold a candle to the original?
While this is definitely a great film, its association to the original is minimal and feels forced, we would have preferred this story had been written to be a standalone film that could have spawned it's own universe.
The premise of the film is similar to 'Hocus Pocus' (1993), but with stomach churning brutality, decidedly not family friendly.
A high point is the acting, especially Ferguson, who gives a haunting and memorable performance.
Flanagan did a good job marrying the film with the original that came out 39 years earlier, managing to bring back the style of Kubrick's original.
The film is very thrilling but we would say it is more in line with Harry Potter in terms of the effects and scariness.
Overall, this is a great watch, albeit a strange and unnecessary sequel; the score, character development, and atmosphere are also highlights.
Features Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, Cliff Curtis, and others.
*Trigger Warning: child abduction and death, drug addiction
