Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark
2010
Troy Nixey
Haunted House , Remake, Scary, Monsters
This remake of the 1973 original is so creepy and atmospheric, very immersive.
The film benefits from legendary horror director, del Toro, working as the producer; bringing a blend of dark fantasy and horror that creates an eerie, atmospheric setting.
The sets are incredible, the mansion and grounds are magical, full of Gothic and Art Nouveau details that are visually stunning.
The CGI is pretty outstanding, bringing the wildly creepy creations to life.
The star of the film is by far the child actor, young Madison's performance is compelling, capturing the fear and bravery of a child facing terrifying circumstances, we couldn't help but feel a long closed child-like part of our brain awaken.
Some scenes are extremely stressful, filling you with dread that build and builds throughout, but overall we do wish it was a bit scarier.
We would have loved some more backstory for the characters but also for the mansion and what resides in it.
Lastly, Holmes is not a convincing actor in any role.
Features Bailee Madison, Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes, Jack Thompson, Julia Blake, and others.
