The Brothers Grimm
2005
Terry Gilliam
Mystery, Comedy, Witchcraft, Family-Friendly, Not Scary
This underrated film is actually quite good, a fun and magical story to enjoy on a cold Fall day with a hot cup of cider.
The Grimm brothers from Germany were real people that collected folktales in Europe and published them in books, their first in 1812; most fairytales you know today are because of these brothers and Disney has made billions off them.
Although Disney changed most of these stories we know well today, they were originally all very scary stories that were told to control society and keep children safe.
In the film we get a clever mashup of many of these tales, retold closer to their scarier origins.
The film has great costumes and sets, an excellent spooky score, and the turn of the century CGI holds up pretty well today.
Although we have tagged this as a kids film, it kind of straddles the line between a kids and an adult film, there are several very scary scenes that will terrify young children, so use your discretion parents.
Features Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Monica Bellucci, Lena Headey, and others.
