What shines in this film is the set and costumes which create an incredible atmosphere that puts you on edge for some great scares.
The film is based on a real-life person and the mansion in the movie still exists today in San Francisco, you can even visit!
Only the exterior of the real mansion was used for filming as the interior was too claustrophobic and maze like.
The film lacks in score, mostly just sound, but what it really lacks in is the script and taking advantage of the enormous mansion, and Helen Mirren.
Overall, it is worth a watch, new horror fans will enjoy.
We do hope a more experienced director revisits this source material in 20 years and creates a masterpiece.
