Phantom Of The Paradise
1974
Brian De Palma
Avant-Garde, Musical, Remake, Not Scary, Campy, Comedy
"Never sing my music again. Not here, not anywhere... Anyone else who tries, dies!"
A truly fresh remake of the classic film 'Phantom Of The Opera' (1925), this is what we like to see from a remake, give us something different.
If you love 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' (1975), you will also enjoy this rock opera, although it doesn't achieve the same level of success, it too has a bit of a cult following.
The film has a beautiful aesthetic and unique style, dark comedy, a wicked score, and it is just all around wonderfully bizarre.
We especially love when they break the "4th wall" and talk directly to the camera.
The origin story of The Phantom is incredible and so layered, you can't not root for him as he is repeated mistreated, a true underdog story.
Features Paul Williams, William Finley, Jessica Harper, Gerrit Graham, George Memmoli, and others.
*Trigger warnings: police mistreatment, homophobic slur, drug use, suicide, and terrorism.
