Puppet Master
1989
David Schmoeller
Dolls, Original, Witchcraft, Scary
This is a really really bizarre story that is a bit confusing, so we will summarize the plot: The film follows a group of psychics who are summoned to a mysterious hotel by their colleague, Neil Gallagher. Upon arrival, they discover that Neil has committed suicide, but soon realize that something far more sinister is at play. The hotel’s previous owner, Andre Toulon, was a puppeteer who discovered an ancient Egyptian secret to bringing inanimate objects to life. His creations, a group of deadly puppets, are now on the loose, wreaking havoc on the guests.
This film definitely has problems with pacing, quite slow for a modern audience.
The star here is the puppets and special effects, although you may be bored, you will keep watching to see what these creepy puppets do next, very imaginative.
The film has its scary moments, but is more so very creepy, especially if you have pupaphobia
(fear of puppets).
Despite its flaws, the film has a cult following and spawned numerous sequels, prequels, and spin-offs; we recommend watching only the first 3 sequels and the 2018 remake.
Features Paul Le Mat, William Hickey, Irene Miracle, Jimmie F. Skaggs, Robin Frates, Matt Roe, Kathryn O’Reilly, Mews Small, and others.
