As Above, So Below

2014

John Erick Dowdle

Thriller, Mystery, Found Footage, Scary, Paranormal

This Found Footage flick is a bit controversial, you will either love it or be unimpressed.
The film came out at the peak of the Found Footage craze that was kicked off by 'Paranormal Activity' (2007) and began to fizzle midway through the next decade; it was not popular at the time of it's release but has since surged in popularity.
If you love Found Footage and Treasure Hunt films, you will have so much fun; the style is documentary.
The films is set in Paris and was actually filmed in the real Catacombs under the city, which is a labyrinth of skeleton filled tunnels.
Nerdy viewers that enjoy chemistry and history will be delighted by the plot, (yes, the same Nicholas Flamel and Philosopher's Stone from Harry Potter), others may find it silly and cheesy.
The dialogue stays on the less cringe side, a rarity for this genre, the acting is mostly good, and the camera work is decent, less nausea inducing than other found Footage flicks.
We do wish it was scarier, there a few jump scares but the director struggled to build and keep tension, largely because there is no score other than the sounds of the tunnels and characters in them.
The final scene is pretty genius, we really enjoyed how they escape, very unexpected.
Despite it's plot problems, this is a fun watch, just go with it.
Features Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, François Civil, and others.
*Trigger Warnings: claustrophobia, death in fire, drowning.
