The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
1920
Robert Wiene
Black & White, Avant-Garde, Must-See, Original, Not Scary
This black and white film is often considered the first great horror film, it is a silent film with German subtitles, and it is a must-see masterpiece.
When the characters speak, you will watch in silence, and then the subtitles will come up for you to read what they just said, put on subtitle unless you want to practice your German.
The characters are silent, but the film has a beautiful and perfect orchestra score to accompany the mayhem.
Although the film is Black and White, parts of the film have been tinged with different colours.
The film is broken up into different acts like in a play, it has shockingly good cinematography and acting, but the real show stopper is the sets which are a whimsical feast for the eyes.
We don’t think you will see the twist coming.
Features Conrad Veidt, Werner Krauss, Lil Dagover, Friedrich Feher, and others.
