Dracula

1931

Karl Freund, Tod Browning

Black & White, Vampires, Remake, Not Scary

This remake was the first Dracula film with sound, in the original film the vampire was called Nosferatu, and the film was silent.
The film is very slow for a modern audience, we recommend you set it to play faster; the acting is very stiff too, remember this was a time when society was very traditional and emotions were repressed.
The camera cuts away before scary parts, leaving them to the imagination, it would have been too scary for the audience at the time.
We get all of the characters you are familiar with in this film; Dracula, Renfield, and Van Helsing.
There is no score and there are no transitions, but the set design is great; the film is not scary but it is menacing.
After this film Bela Lugosi became typecast as a horror villain.
Features Bella Lugosi, Helen Chandler, David Manners, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Herbert Bunston, Frances Dade, Joan Standing, and Charles K. Gerrard.
