Night Of The Living Dead
1968
George A. Romero
Zombies, Original, Scary
They're coming for you Barbra!
This is the 1st film in this franchise of 7 films (Some of the films, including this one, have remakes).
There is a only one surviving Zombie film that came before this, 'White Zombie' (1932); Romero really had free reign and created the zombie franchise as we know it today with this film and the successive sequels.
After watching this franchise you will see how they influenced later films, the house scene in '28 Days Later' definitely feels reminiscent of this film.
You probably have never seen zombies like this, only the freshly deceased rise from the grave so they do look fresh, still in their best clothes from their funerals.
The filming style is great, it feels claustrophobic, like the viewer is standing there with them.
The film has a great score but also makes great use of silence, there is very little dialogue, but that doesn't hold you back from feeling their panic.
The film is low gore, but has some good disturbing scenes, and a great ending.
There is a scene that feels stolen from 'Psycho' (1960).
Features Judith O'Dea, Duane Jones, and others.
